Annie Mildred Hill, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, an esteemed educator, a dedicated church member, and a servant leader, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2024. Born on March 24, 1924, in Athens, Georgia, Annie, who was affectionately known as Sister, Mommie by her loved ones, was the daughter of Claude and Sally Williamson. She was the last surviving sibling among her brothers Bo and Charles, and sister Margie.
At the tender age of 10, Annie joined the Greater Bethel AME Church, where her parents were active members. Her mother, a church musician, inspired Annie to start playing the piano at the age of 12. Following her mother's retirement, Annie gracefully stepped into the role of the church pianist.
Annie's love story began in high school when she met James H. Hill, Sr., whom she married during her college years at Morris Brown College. The couple enjoyed 31 years of marriage until James' passing. Annie, a proud alumna of Morris Brown College, graduated in 1964. She frequently returned to Athens during her college years to play music at her church and continued to serve as a pianist post-graduation, generously offering her talents without seeking compensation. She fondly recalled organizing the first youth choir at Greater Bethel AME Church.
Her professional journey as an educator started at Bryant Elementary and High School in Jackson County, where she was the sole African-American teacher. After a commendable 15-year tenure, during which she was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1960-61, Annie transitioned to South Jackson Elementary School. There, she taught 5th grade English for 16 years and was recognized as Jackson County's Teacher of the Year in 1983. Despite her busy schedule, she always found time to provide music for school graduations and other events.
In retirement, Annie devoted herself to her church and family. She cared for her mother and led numerous church activities, including a significant fundraising campaign to add a steeple to the church in 1984. An enthusiastic bowler, she was a member of the Lucky Strikers at Showtime Bowling in Athens. She also co-founded the Greater Bethel AME Church pastors' ministry, where she managed media relations and sent cards to the sick and homebound members.
Annie's legacy is marked by her unwavering dedication, commitment, and concern for others. She consistently encouraged her family to pursue education, lead in their endeavors, be self-reliant, and maintain a strong faith in God.
Annie is lovingly remembered by her sons, James H. "Jimmy" Hill, Jr., and Michael R.(Tammie) Hill; her grandchildren, Michael Terence (Melonie) Hill, Arkesha "Kesha" Hill, and Cornelius (Tremayne) Hill; 7 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Her life was a testament to love, service, and faith, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
