Bessie Mae Haynes Gilmore was born March 2, 1933 to
the late John Henry and Julia B. Haynes in Oglethorpe
County, Georgia. She departed this earthly life on
Saturday, March 18, 2023. She was also preceded in death
by her four siblings, brothers Charles, Robert and Johnny
Haynes, sister Susan Bacon. Bessie Mae joined the East
Friendship Baptist Church at an early age.
After retiring from Wilkins Industries (Sewing Plant), she
became a caregiver through the Athens Community
Council on Aging’s Senior Companion program. A job
she held dear to her heart. These traits as a caregiver
continued after leaving her home due to illness. Bessie
Mae entered Pruitt Athens Heritage as a resident, but she
looked out for her beloved roommate as if hired to do so.
Bessie Mae (affectionately called Auntee Bessie) did not
have children of her own, but she loved and babysat her
nieces and nephews then great nieces and nephews. She
would also irritate the neighbors, because she fed the stray
cats and dogs coming across her yard.
Auntee Bessie leaves cherished memories to her beloved
nieces and nephews, neighbors, and nursing staff at the
Nursing Home.
