Christine W. Howard
1933-2021
Christine Weaver Howard, 87 of Athens, began her eternal journey Wednesday, March 17, 2021.
As a child, Chris was an exceptional athlete and became one of the most outstanding basketball players ever at Athens High and Industrial School, leading her team to many victories. She was amongst the list of 2011 Athens Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees.
Chris began her service to others as an evening volunteer for young girls at the Rocksprings Recreation Center in 1961. She was employed in 1963 as a center leader at Rocksprings and began to increase and diversify the programming and was later promoted to an area recreation supervisor. Chris worked to ensure that the neighborhood children were exposed to a variety of activities that would help prepare them for life until her retirement in 1999.
As a servant of God, Chris shared her talents with her church home and shepherded over various events. She continued her vision for youth development and exposure with the Hill Chapel Legacy Award Scholarship. Never settling, she dutifully sought contributions to fully fund the event and the scholarship to ensure that it was a success.
She is survived by her granddaughter, reared in the home as a daughter, Tanganika Howard; siblings, Juanita W. Cunningham, Betty W. (Richard) Lee, Gloria W. Glass, Evelyn (John) Barrow, Mildred Dillard, Deborah Weaver and Brian K. (Patricia) Weaver; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 12 noon at East Lawn Memorial Cemetery, 825 Winterville Road, Athens, GA 30606. The public viewing will be held on Friday, March 26 from 1:00-7:00 pm at the funeral home.
