His Story
James Henry Burton, Sr. was born May 10, 1934 to the late Johnnie and Carrie Burton in Washington, Georgia.
James, Sr. attended Athens High and Industrial School. In 1952 he married Annie Mildred Allen. And in 1958 James moved his family to Chicago, Illinois for economical opportunities, where he worked as a chef. After living in Chicago for 13 months, he moved his family back to Athens, Georgia.
In 1971 he attended Winterville Technical School where trained and learned the trade of “Body and Fender Repair".. After completing his courses, he worked at Carney Body Shop. Later he learned to repair radiators and at that time he stated his on business, Burton’s Radiator Shop where he owned and operated for 40 years until his retirement in 2017.
James, Sr. enjoyed family gatherings and cookouts where he loved telling jokes and laughing at his own jokes when no one else would laugh. He also loved to read.
He peacefully departed this earth on June 30, 2022. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Willie Burton; daughter, Jennifer Yvonne Burton; and sisters, Lucille Binion and Sarah Johnson.
James, Sr. is survived by his wife of 70 years, Annie Mildred Burton; daughter, Brenda (William) Harris; sons, James (Levada) Burton, Jr., and Alan Burton; sister-in-law, Mary Burton; grandchildren, Derrick (Chanda) Harris, Kimberly (Travis) Alston, Destiny Span-Burton, Aaron (Keessence) Burton and Victoria Span-Burton; great-grandchildren, Essence Harris, Bradley Alston, Devin Harris, Jennifer Alston, Jaiden Burton and Jayla Burton; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
James will be remembered as a very impressive man and he is truly missed!
