Joan Mack Obituary

Her Story

“Joan carried many titles, she was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She touched everyone’s life she encountered with boundless love, wisdom, and kindness!”

Joan Jaqueline Thomas (affectionally nicknamed “Jack” by her family) was born in Athens, Georgia to Jerome and Della Stovall Thomas on April 10, 1950.

She graduated from Burney Harris High School, where she was crowned “Ms. Burney Harris 1968” by her senior class. Joan continued her education and attended Savannah State University.

On March 31, 1972, Joan married Charles Richard Mack, Sr.

Her gentle spirit and unwavering strength were the foundation of our family. Joan had a passion for teaching and helping others in any way that she could. She dedicated 32 years of herlife in the field of education at Chase Street Elementary School, where she inspired countless young minds with patience, creativity, and loving care. Beyond the classroom, she continued her mission to uplift others, especially the youth, serving as Co-Director of Burney Harris Day Camp and making a lasting impact on her community.

A faithful servant of God, Joan was a devoted member of. Timothy Baptist Church, where she served as a Deaconess and was actively involved in the Seasoned Saints and L.A.C. Ministries. Her faith and service were a testament to her compassionate and generous spirit, always striving to bring joy and support to those around her.

Whether through her warm hugs, or her words of encouragement, she made everyone feel special and deeply loved.

Her legacy of compassion, grace, and unwavering faith will forever be cherished in our hearts. Heaven has gained an angel, but her memory and values will forever guide us on our “earthly journey".

Joan was preceded in death by her father, Jerome Thomas; sister, Peggy Thomas Barrow; and husband, Rev. Charles R. Mack, Sr.

On Thursday, January 16, 2025, our Heavenly Father called our beloved “Jack” to her eternal home and our lives will be forever changed.

Beautiful memories of Joan will linger in the hearts, minds and spirits of her children, Charles Richard Mack, Jr. (Kimberly), James Alexander Mack (Teira), and Timothy Jamel (Chelsea) Mack; mother, Della Mae Thomas; stepchildren, Jacqueline Mack and Darren Mack; grandchildren, Jordan Mack, Zowie Robinson, James Mack, Kingston Mack, Malajah Ballard, Jayden Mack, and McKenna Mack; a special step-grandson, Bobby (Corrina) Mack; sister, Sheila (Andrew) Barrow; nieces, Lisa Barrow Yearby and Bertina Barrow (Lamorris) Smith; nephews, Okorie Barrow and Braxtin (Keanna) Barrow; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Mack and Sandra Mack; other step-grandchildren and nieces, nephews; a host of other relatives and friends.
