Mamie Vernice Fortson Funderburk, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, entered into eternal rest on August 16, 2025, at the age of 81. She was born on January 19, 1944, in Tignall, Georgia, to the late Horace and Julia Mae Fortson.
Mamie was a proud graduate of Albany State College, Class of 1966, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing Education. Soon after, she began what became a remarkable career as a Registered Nurse that spanned more than 50 years. She first served at Southwest Community Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, where she worked as a Charge Nurse, in both the recovery and operating rooms, and later as Director of the Operating Room for eight years. In 1997, she continued her service at Georgia Baptist Hospital (later Atlanta Medical Center), where she served as an Operating Room Staff Nurse, Operating Room Educator, and finally as Urology Coordinator. Following retirement, she continued her passion for care in home health, serving as Director of Nursing for Accessible Home Health Care and Readinurses Home Care, Inc. Her dedication, compassion, and leadership touched countless lives and left a lasting legacy in the nursing profession.
Mamie’s love and devotion to God began at Clifford Grove Baptist Church in Rayle, Georgia. A woman of strong faith, she later became a devoted member of Calvary Missionary Baptist
Church in College Park, Georgia, where she worshiped and served faithfully. She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Julia Mae Fortson, and her brothers,
Horace Fortson, Jr., and Theodore Martin.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving daughters, Vanessa Gibson (Ramon) and Vershion Lee (Adam); her granddaughter, Kyla Gibson; her grandsons, Kyrie Gibson and Adam
Lee V; her great-granddaughter, Kylie Hoe; her sisters, Thelma Maddox, Annie Lumpkin, Rosa Marie Fortson, and Carolyn Fortson; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Fortson, along with a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins, lifelong friends, and extended family.
Mamie’s life was defined by love, service, and faith. She will be remembered for her kind spirit, her devotion to helping others, and the unwavering care she gave both to her patients and her family.
