Rev. Charles Mack, Sr. Obituary

CHARLES RICHARD MACK, SR was born on October 2, 1942 in Athens, Georgia to the late Brother Louis E. Mack and the late Sister Daisy Barnett Mack. He departed this life on Friday, August 20, 2022. He was preceded in death by his son Alex Mack and two brothers, Louis Mack II and Herman Mack.

Charles completed his early education in Athens, Georgia. He graduated from Athens High and Industrial, class of 1960, and furthered his education by attending Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama where he majored in Industrial Education. He attended and graduated from the University of Georgia, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Master’s degree in Educational Administration. Upon completing his academic studies, he began his professional career as an educator in the Clarke County School District, working as a social studies teacher. From there, he served as Assistant Principal at Burney Harris Middle School until 1981.

In addition to his work in education, Charles was enthusiastic on doing the work of The Lord. He devoted his life to Christ at an early age becoming a long-time member of Springfield Baptist Church in Athens, Georgia, where he served in various ministries including Adult Sunday School teacher, Associate Pastor and Baptist minister. 

Charles loved his Athens community, and his passion for teaching and serving others extended beyond his professional roles. He served as Vice President and President of various organizations for Educators and Ministerial Unions, as well as Phi Delta Kappa, Vice President of Clarke County Chapter N.A.A.C.P, Athens City Councilman (Ward One), City Public Works Committee, Secretary of the 8th District General, Political Action Committee, Community Affairs Commission, Committee for Preserving Northeast Athens, Oconee County Progressive Men Club, and American Cancer Society.

Charles was married to the love of his life, his wife, Joan Thomas Mack for 50 years. He also leaves to cherish his memory: four sons, Darren Mack, Highlands Ranch, CO, Charles Jr., James, and Timothy Mack, all of Athens, GA; one daughter, Jaqueline Mack, Athens, GA. He has one surviving brother, James C. (Sandra) Mack, Atlanta, GA. Also he leaves his mother-in-law Della S. Thomas; two sisters-in-law Sheila (Andrew) Barrow and Bonnie Mack; God daughter; Teira Robinson; six grandsons Armondo, Bobby, Tony, James, Kingston, and Jayden Mack; four granddaughters, Darian and Jordan Mack, Zowie Robinson, and Malajah Ballard; three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
