Walter Columbus Davenport of Athens was born September 29, 1921 in Oconee County, Georgia to the late Israel and Nancy Clower Davenport. He was educated in the Oconee County School System. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, 5 sisters and his devoted wife of 67 years, Beatrice Thrasher Davenport.
He was reared in Farmington, Georgia, where he joined Mount Zion Baptist Church at an early age. After marrying, the couple relocated to Atlanta, where he united with the Lindsay Street Baptist Church. Walter was a Deacon and Usher and served faithfully until the couple relocated to Athens, Georgia. In Athens, he united with Springfield Baptist Church, serving on the Deacon Board and he served faithfully until his health declined.
Walter is a World War II Army Veteran. He retired from A&P Distribution Center after 36 years of employment and a lifetime member of Masonic Advance Lodge #31.
He leaves to cherish his memories, a devoted sister/caretaker, Annie Bell Davenport; sister, Mable Lee Stancil; aunt, Lucille Moses; brother-in-law, George Cash; devoted cousin/caretaker, Carolyn Davenport; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends at the home of Ms. Carolyn Davenport.
